The months of June and
July I spent working with the Social Welfare Workers in the
refugee camp (see above picture). This was the first formal
training for the Social Welfare Workers after two years of having
an official title in the camp. We spent a total of 75 hours
together with the aim of strengthening the workers so that they
are better able to assist community members with the current
social issues. The topics covered in the trainings include the
role of the social worker in the community, problem solving
skills, human rights and women's rights, the camp laws that
are relevant to the work that they do, counseling skills, and
domestic violence.
The group was dynamic
and it was an enriching experience for everyone. Many of the
workers are dedicated to the improvement of their community,
but are not sure how they can help. It was a chance for them
to share experiences and learn from each other. It was agreed
that it was an excellent opportunity, and there was a unanimous
call for more trainings. We will continue meeting throughout
the year, as well as creating a training manual.
